Το Αιγιο ειναι μια απο τις αρχαιοτερες πολεις της Ελλαδας και των Βαλκανιων .Πρωτοι κατοικοι του ηταν οι Πελασγοι , ομως ως ιδρυτες της ενιαιας πολης φερονται οι Ιωνες. Στα μεσα του 16ου αιωνα ηρθαν απο την Αττικη , κατελαβαν την ευφορη Αιγιαλεια και ενωθηκαν ειρηνικα με τους Αιγιαλεις Πελασγους . Οι Ιωνες νομιμοποιησαν το κεντρο της επικυριαρχιας τους στην Πελοποννησο στο αρχαιο Αιγιο , οπου ηταν σε μεγαλη ακμη το ιερο του Δια που ονομαζοταν Ομαγυριος ( απο το ομηγυρη--συγκεντρωση ) . Οπως μαρτυρουν οι θαλαμοειδεις ταφοι που βρεθηκαν στην περιοχη της Καλλιθεας αλλα και τα οικιστικα λειψανα που ηλθαν στο φως απο ανασκαφες σε διαφορα σημεια της πολης , το Αιγιο κατα τη μυκηνα'ι'κη περιοδο (1150--1060 π.Χ ) σημειωσε μεγαλη ακμη και ιδιαιτερα γυρω στο 1200 με 1100 π.Χ , οποτε ελαβε χωρα και ο Τρω'ι'κος πολεμος ( 1184 π.Χ )
